High Efficiency File Transfer

High Efficiency File Transfer* is a file transfer technology provided commercially from Aspera©. It provides a reliable and faster (up to 1000x standard FTP) data transfer solution. This technology overcomes the challenge of large data set transfers over any Internet Protocol (IP) network, regardless of network conditions and geographic distance. This tool uses standard UDP (User Datagram Protocol), an alternative to TCP where guaranteed delivery is not required. Reliability is achieved in the application layer "FASP©", which retransmits the real packet loss on the channel.

The solution provides complete built-in security, precise transfer rate control for guaranteed data delivery times, end-to-end transfer progress reporting, and supports interoperable file and directory transfers.

The PO.DAAC offers this new file transfer option to our users. Please follow the steps below to use Aspera©.

Step 1: Choose an option:

Solaris:
ftp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/aspera/ASPRwebclient-1.3.2.0.pkg
Linux:
ftp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/aspera/Aspera-webclient-1.3.2.0-1.i386.rpm
Windows:
ftp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/aspera/AsperaWebClient-1.3.2.0.msi
MAC:
ftp://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/aspera/AsperaWebClient-1.3.4.2.dmg

Step 2: Download Data from PO.DAAC

Select data from our "Data Catalog" button found on our navigation bar.

After choosing, navigate to the directory you wish to download. Then,

  • PC and Mac users: download data directly by clicking on one of the High Efficiency File Transfer Download buttons. Note that there are two download options depending on your broadband connections:

    • Regular broadband connection (Aspera© default transfer rate @ 1.5 Mbits/sec):
      (T1 / E1 / DSL / CableModem)
    • High Speed broadband connection (Aspera© default transfer rate @ 15.0 Mbits/sec):
      (T3 / E3 / OC3 / OC12 / OC48)
When the High Efficiency File Transfer Web Client Authentication window pops up,
    Username: guest, Password: podaac

  • Linux and Solaris users: Use the command line executable "asperawebget"
and insert the desired directory. Username: guest, Password: podaac

Command Line Examples for ASPERA Web Client Usueage on LINUX/SOLARIS:

Regular Speed Example:
% asperawebget "fasp://aspera.jpl.nasa.gov//pub/sea_surface_temperature/avhrr/pathfinder/data_v5/daily/ascending
/4km/2000/sst?
enc=no&auth=yes&port=33001&maxrate=45000&defrate=1500&adapt=yes"

High Speed Example:
% asperawebget "fasp://aspera.jpl.nasa.gov//pub/sea_surface_temperature/avhrr/pathfinder/data_v5/daily/ascending
/4km/2000/sst
?enc=no&auth=yes&port=33001&maxrate=45000&defrate=15000&adapt=yes"

Note:
"red text" = Update to desired subdirectories.
defrate =
- Default Rate 1.5 Mbits/sec (Regular Speed)
