The PO.DAAC is pleased to announce the public release of the MetOp-C ASCAT Level 2 Ocean Surface Wind Vectors 12.5-km and 25-km datasets. This is a product of the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF) provided through the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). ASCAT is a C-band dual swath fan beam radar scatterometer providing two independent swaths of backscatter retrievals in a sun-synchronous polar orbit aboard the MetOp-C platform. The MetOp-C platform is the 3rd in the MetOp series of EUMETSAT’s meteorological satellite platforms after MetOp-A and MetOp-B. More information regarding the MetOp-C mission is available from the EUMETSAT mission webpage, and data/instrument status can be retrieved via the KNMI dataset web pages for the 12.5-km and 25-km datasets.

Datasets comprising this release include the 12.5-km Level 2 Ocean Surface Wind Vectors Optimized for the Coastal Ocean and the 25-km Level 2 Ocean Surface Wind Vectors in Full Orbit Swath. Both datasets are provided at nominal 2-hour latency at 12.5-km and 25-km discretely sampled swath-grid resolution respectively. The data coverage is global, starting on 22 October 2019 and continuing to the present day with a temporal repeat cycle of 5 days. Data are provided in netCDF-3, CF-compliant format.
