Availability and access to regional Aquarius Salinity data

Dear PO.DAAC,
I am interested in acquiring salinity data from Aquarius for certain regions, including the Red Sea, Caspian Sea, and area around Java (Indonesia).

Thanks for your email to PO.DAAC and inquiry regarding the availability of Aquarius v3.0 data for your areas of interest. We do archive global salinity data from Aquarius that will cover the regions around Indonesia/Java etc. There are a variety of v3.0 data products available, including both Level 2 (orbital/swath) and L3 gridded/mapped datasets, but most likely you would want to work with the L3 gridded data. A full listing and description of these are available via the online PO.DAAC catalog, https://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/datasetlist?search=aquarius%20%252Bproject . Note, however, the coverage at L3 could be limited for such locations especially near-shore and close to the island chain or "inland" seas like the Red and Caspian in part because of the coarser data spatial resolution (1 degree Lat/Lon) and also a range of technical issues that complicates retrievals nearer-shore (eg. land contamination/masking, RFI etc). Some of these issues are discussed in the Aquarius Data validation document available at https://podaac-tools.jpl.nasa.gov/drive ... ion2.0.pdf. Having said this, I encourage you to check out the data, and provide you with some further information on Aquarius related resources to assist you below.

The Aquarius L3 global data files are in HDF5 format, and can be read and subsetted using the Matlab or IDL routines that we provide. For further information please consult the Aquarius Users Guide available from https://podaac-tools.jpl.nasa.gov/drive ... etV3.0.pdf. The guide also documents the detailed structure of all the Aquarius data files that is important to understand before attempting to work with the data. It additionally lists a range of Tools and Services that are available for Aquarius data.

Amongst these online tools is LAS (https://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/las) , a web-based L3 data visualization & subsetting tool. For a guide and tutorial to using LAS see https://podaac-tools.jpl.nasa.gov/drive ... orials/las. As shown in the accompanying screenshot attachments, LAS will allow you to select a dataset of interest (eg. pick an Aquarius SSS/salinity 7day product from the list), and then interactively define a region, and specify a date to see the imaged data via your Web-browser (see screenshots below). You can also export a time series of imagery data (as values) in several formats for a period of your choice and predefined area of interest by clicking the "Save As" main menu item. This will allow you to create a single file with likely all the data you will need for your area.

Finally, https://podaac.jpl.nasa.gov/aquarius is a webpage that contains information and links to useful Aquarius-related resources that you should be aware of, including technical documentation and other Tools/Services available for Aquarius.
