How to mount PO.DAAC Drive on your local computer via Linux

Install davfs2. It's available in both the yum and apt-get package management systems.

You can now use the mount command to mount PO.DAAC Drive as a drive of the type davfs. For example:

mkdir /mnt/podaac_drive

sudo mount.davfs https://podaac-tools.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files /mnt/podaac_drive

PO.DAAC Drive will now be available under the /mnt/podaac_drive path

Troubleshooting mount issues via Linux

Postby mgierach » Tue Jun 04, 2019 3:18 pm

If your mounted drive is not syncing, consider un-mounting and then re-mounting following "How to mount PO.DAAC Drive on your local computer via Linux".

Also, consider establishing mounts at desired levels of the archive (i.e. only for data that you expect to access and not the full archive).

Hi,

I was wondering if you could help with the following problem:

- When I try to mount the PO.DAAC drive following the instruction listed in this thread, I receive the following error:
mount.davfs: Mounting failed.
SSL handshake failed: SSL alert received: Error in protocol version

- I'm using version davfs2-1.4.7-8.el6

- The operating system of my computer is RHEL 6.3

Thanks for your help!

Good morning. I had the same issue with RHEL 6.3 when I tired to troubleshoot your issue. You may have to update the computer to a RHEL 7 version as I do not experience handshake issue in these versions.

Hello

I'm trying to mount PODAAC Drive in my Ubuntu 18.04 system but I'm getting an error message and can't mount. It asks for username and password, I put my EarthData user and pass

meteo@BOIRA:/media/meteo$ sudo mount.davfs https://podaac-tools.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files /media/meteo/podaac_drive
Please enter the username to authenticate with server
https://podaac-tools.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files or hit enter for none.
Username: paco@ceam.es
Please enter the password to authenticate user paco@ceam.es with server
https://podaac-tools.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/files or hit enter for none.
Password:
mount.davfs: Mounting failed.
500 Internal Server Error

What am I doing wrong? How can I mount without having to put user/pass each time? How do I set up to mount on every system restart?

Thanks in advance and stay safe at home

Hello Pacomet. The EarthData username and password does not work for mounting. Please use your long alpha-numeric password found on in this URL <https://podaac-tools.jpl.nasa.gov/drive/>.

Hi,

I tried to map the drive and I get:

mount.davfs: Mounting failed.
401 Unauthorized

I then tried to mount the drive in windows, with the same credentials and I can connect without an issue.

Any ideas as to why is rejecting my credentials?

Thanks

Hey March Jacob. I'm not sure why your Windows machine works and not your Linux machine. If you are mounting this on your personal Linux machine, try becoming 'root' first and then mount if with your user credentials.
