Gulf of Tehuantepec eddies in SOTO

A topic I like to use to illustrate the synthesis of remotely sensed ocean temperature, color and wind data is the phenomenon of upwelling and primary productivity driven by winds in the Gulf of Tehuantepec. One of these events is in full swing today, and can be very nicely explored wth the PO.DAAC State of the Ocean (SOTO) tool.

This scene shows temperature anomaly overlaid with winds from the ASCAT scatterometer. Strong northerly winds contribute to mixing down into cooler, nutrient rich waters.

The injection of new nutrients into surface waters drives a phytoplankton bloom which is seen if you switch out the SST anomaly layer and show ocean color in SOTO. You need to use the "position" tool to bring the wind vectors back to the top layer. You will get a view like this:
