The PO.DAAC is pleased to announce the public release of the GHRSST Level-4 MW-OI and MW-IR-OI Sea Surface Temperature (SST) v5.1 datasets produced by the Remote Sensing Systems (REMSS).

This release consists of two datasets: MW_IR_OI-REMSS-L4-GLOB-v5.1 and MW_OI-REMSS-L4-GLOB-v5.1. The v5.1 data is updated from the previous v5.0 (DOI: 10.5067/GHMWI-4FR05 and 10.5067/GHMWO-4FR05) with extensive algorithm improvements and upgrades. The updates include: updating sensor inputs from recent satellite missions, improving the single sensor error statistics (SSES) for each microwave sensor, correcting the deficiencies in the optimal interpolation(OI) implementation, and file metadata upgrades.

The MW_IR_OI-REMSS-L4-GLOB-v5.1 data are derived from the microwave (MW) and Infrared (IR) sensors with a 0.09 degree resolution, while the MW_OI-REMSS-L4-GLOB-v5.1 data are derived from the microwave sensors with a 0.25 degree resolution. Both of the datasets provide global daily SSTs in netCDF-4 format, and are in compliance with the Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) Data Processing Specification version 2.0 (GDS2). Detailed information regarding the GHRSST Level 4 products are available from the GHRSST website and also via PO.DAAC’s GHRSST mission webpage.

The datasets are described and discoverable via the PO.DAAC dataset information pages. Users are encouraged to use the PO.DAAC Data downloader/subscriber ( to download the data.
