Description | The Salinity and Stratification at the Sea Ice Edge (SASSIE) project is a NASA experiment that aims to understand how salinity anomalies in the upper ocean generated by melting sea ice affect sea surface temperature (SST), stratification, and subsequent sea-ice growth. SASSIE involved a field campaign that sampled the transition from summer melt to autumn ice advance in the Beaufort Sea during August-October 2022, making intensive in situ and remote sensing observations within ~200km of the sea ice edge. A waveglider is an autonomous platform propelled by the conversion of ocean wave energy into forward thrust and employing solar panels to power instrumentation. During the SASSIE deployment, four wavegliders were deployed near Prudhoe Bay on 12-14 August 2022. The wavegliders collect measurements of ocean surface salinity, temperature, currents, waves, and meteorological data. Custom integrated Casting CTDs provide additional profiles of salinity and temperature to a depth of 150m below the surface. L1 data are available as a compressed file containing graphics of the measurements alongside MATLAB data files. |
