The Mississippi River is the largest river in North America, draining ~41% of the contiguous United States. More than half of the freshwater input into the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) comes from the Mississippi River.

Waves are the most commonly viewed feature of the ocean. Forcing of wind on the ocean surface can generate waves that propagate across entire ocean basins. Wave height is dependent upon wind speed and fetch (or distance over water which a given wind may blow without interruption).
