DescriptionAquarius CAP Level 3 sea surface salinity (sss) standard mapped image data contains gridded sss obtained via the Combined-Active-Passive (CAP) algorithm and averaged over a 7-day time period. The Aquarius instrument is onboard the Aquarius/SAC-D satellite, a collaborative effort between NASA and the Argentinian Space Agency Comision Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE). Aquarius Level 2 data contains sea surface salinity (SSS) estimates derived from 3 different radiometers, backscatter measurements from an active scatterometer, ancillary fields, flags, converted telemetry and navigation data. The CAP algorithm used to produce this Aquarius L3 product differs from the standard Aquarius algorithm in the following ways: 1) removal of the dependence on the NCEP wind direction for retrieval via usage of onboard scatterometer for the SSS roughness correction; 2) The CAP algorithm simultaneously retrieves the salinity, wind speed and direction by minimizing the sum of squared differences between model and observations. Each granule covers one 98 minute orbit. Alongtrack resolution refers to sampling interval as the satellite moves along its orbit while acrosstrack resolution refers to the actual footprint size across the satellite orbit. The instrument consists of three radiometers in push broom alignment at incidence angles of 28.7, 37.8, and 45.6 degrees with respect to the ocean surface. Footprints for the beams are: 74 km (alongtrack) x 94 km (crosstrack), 84 kmx120 km and 96kmx156 km yielding a total crosstrack resolution of 370 km. The radiometers measure brightness temperature at 1.414 GHz in their respective horizontal and vertical polarizations (TH and TV). A scatterometer onboard measures ocean backscatter in each footprint used for corrections in the estimation of salinity. The scatterometer has an approximate 390km swath. This V1.3 of the data is based on CAP 2.1.4. It is to be considered an evaluation data set.
